Tour Summary
Kimberley Birdwatching Tour & Remote Mitchell Falls Expedition
19-29 May 2026
Kununurra – Drysdale River – Punamii-unpuu (Mitchell Falls) – Ord River – Wyndham – Kununurra – Lake Argyle, Western Australia
The Kimberley is one of the most remote, wild and beautiful regions on Earth and is home to some of the last true wilderness areas in Australia.
Join NT Bird Specialists’ epic 11 Day Kimberley Birding Tour in May 2026 to explore the biodiverse tropical habitats found within Australia’s north-west, Western Australia.
Kimberley Honeyeater, Partridge Pigeon and Black Grasswren at Mitchell Falls, Yellow Chats at Lake Argyle and Finches in Wyndham are some of the key target bird species in the Kimberley.
The Kimberley supports one of the richest webs of birds, wildlife and living aboriginal cultures in Australia, being home to over 290 bird species, exquisite astro and landscapes and fascinating ancient Aboriginal Wandjina and Gwion Gwion rock art.
This exclusive expedition is the most immersive Kimberley birding & wildlife tour available!
Mitchell Falls is a highlight of the expedition and one of the most remote birding sites in Australia.
Access is via multiple days birding while driving from Kununurra, Western Australia, along the famous Gibb River Road.
The effort to get there deserves rewarding guests with a 3 night stay to get to know the country and seek target birds, wildlife and experiences without rushing the driving and bushwalking elements. And to truly appreciate the stunning environment you find yourself in on tour with NT Bird Specialists.
To navigate the vast distances we’ll explore on foot, by private 4WD bus and 5-hour chartered boat, plus optional helicopter scenic flights.
Our spacious and 4WD vehicle with trailer set up and experienced tour vehicle licensed drivers make this extremely remote and rugged landscape far more comfortable and accessible for our guests. With a maximum of 8 guests, large window seats are available to all guests.
This unique itinerary is purposefully designed to position our basecamp as close to nature (and Black Grasswrens) as possible – allowing us to stay right onsite at Punamii-unpuu (Mitchell Falls) and give us multiple attempts at viewing and photographing the endemic birds and wildlife of the Kimberley, as well as spotlighting sessions, astro photography and swimming in exclusive waterholes.
*This is our only tour with a combination of hotels (7 nights) and camping (3 nights, comfortable camping on elevated stretcher tents, hearty campfire cooked meals under the stars and access to solar power and shared amenities).
**Subject to availability, guests can opt to further reduce the main tour and single supplement price if opting for a 5 night hotel/5 night camping package.
You may also choose to extend your stay with pre and post-tour accommodation and connecting tours.
